KINGSMEN COMPLETE COMEBACK AGAINST COPPERHEADS IN OPENING GAME OF SCBL PLAYOFFS

Kingsmen Walk-Off

July 26, 2022

York, SC – Kingsmen Baseball won in dramatic fashion earlier this evening at York Comprehensive High School, scoring four runs in the bottom of the 9th to defeat the Lake Norman Copperheads with a final score of 10-9. The two teams finished the game even in hits, recording seven each. Errors were common in the game with four committed by Lake Norman and five made by the Kingsmen. Lake Norman took an early lead with four runs in the top of the 1st. Kingsmen fought back with two runs in the bottom of the 1st including an RBI single by Burke Camper. Both teams would score a run in the 2nd. Kingsmen would continue to dig out of the deficit with two runs in the 4th to tie the game and would score a go-ahead run in the 5th, but pitching and fielding would struggle in the 6th, allowing Lake Norman to jump back out to a three-run lead. After the 7th and 8th innings went scoreless, Kingsmen would get an early runner on base with a hit-by-pitch to Jack Austin. With one out after Anthony Mitta and Burke Camper reach base on walks to load the bases, an RBI single to center field by Johnny Sweeney would go on to tie the game as an error allowed two additional runs to score. Sawyer Reeves would then hit a fly ball down the right field line, which was caught but deep enough for the winning run to score, putting Kingsmen Baseball in the winners’ bracket in the SCBL Playoffs. Zach Saufl pitched the final two outs in the top of the 9th and was the winning pitcher.

Cam McNearney went two for four at the plate with a triple and a double as well as two runs and an RBI. Johnny Sweeney recorded a hit and drove in two RBIs.
