YORK- The Piedmont Pride (18-6), after enduring a rainout on Wednesday, were back in action Friday with a doubleheader against the Concord Athletics (10-21). The Pride took Game One decisively 12-1, and won on a walk-off single by Jake Wright in extra innings in Game Two, winning 5-4.
The Pride was dominant in the Game One win as they scored 12 runs on 17 hits. The first three batters for the Pride did the most damage. The trio of Connor Wilson, Hayden Smith, and Joe Campagna combined for seven hits, five runs batted in, and five runs scored.
The Pride hitters were effective up and down the lineup, with six different batters recording at least two hits and seven doubles hit as a team. Wilson recorded his first four-hit game of the season. Cory Conway was effective in his fourth start of the season, allowing only one earned run in four innings of work.
Game Two was a tightly contested game that saw the Pride and Athletics go back and forth the entire contest. The Pride led off the scoring in the bottom of the first, but the Athletics would score two runs in the next inning. The Pride tied in the game in the fourth inning on a RBI double by Josh Baker. Again the A’s answered with a run in the fifth and seventh and held a 4-2 lead.
In bottom of the seventh, with the Pride down two and two outs in the inning, Kitt Capell came to the plate as a pinch hitter. With two men on base Capell doubled in the left center gap, helping drive both runners in and tying the game.
Alex Nodars shut down the Athletics in the top of the eight. In the bottom of the inning with a runner on third, Jake Wright singled past the diving shortstop to win the game. His teammates rushed out of the dugout and celebrated with Wright at first base.
Nodarse earned his fourth win of the season in relief, and the Pride improved to 2-0 in extra innings this season. Capell finished the night with three doubles hit in both games, and now leads the team in doubles with seven.
“That’s the beauty of the game of baseball. We’ve had so many doubleheaders this season where there’s a blowout in the first game and a nip and tuck second game.” Coach Joe Hudak said postgame. “We’re a good offensive club, a never say die offensive club. Kitt Capell came up in a real clutch spot with that two-run double.”
The Pride have another doubleheader scheduled Saturday at Hough High School against the Lake Norman Copperheads. First pitch is at 5 pm.
