CONCORD, NC- The Pride win two hard fought games on the road Saturday, and complete a four game sweep of the Concord Athletics. The final score of Game 1 was 2-1 and Game 2 went into extra innings and the Pride prevailed 4-1.
The pitching staff has been the difference maker so far in this young season, and today was no exception. Enrique Perez threw a complete game in the Game 1 and Alex Nodarse and the rest of the relievers shined in Game 2.
Perez was dominant in his first start of the season, striking out 10 batters and giving up only 4 hits and a lone earned run. Perez was very efficient, only needing 82 pitches to go the distance. The offense provided enough support, a solo home run by Zach Shank in the fourth, and a sacrifice bunt by Hayden Smith that scored a run in the seventh.
Coach Joe Hudak hadn’t anticipated Perez pitching a complete game, but it was very beneficial for the team as they had fresh relief pitchers that were needed for the second game.
Tommy Guglielmello was the starter in Game 2 and pitched four solid innings of one run baseball. Nodarse entered Game 2 in the sixth with the game tied. He got out of the inning with a double play that ended the A’s chance of taking the lead. And in the seventh he struck out the side to send the game into extras.
In the top of the eighth, Roury Glanton stepped up with the game defining at bat. With two men on base, Glanton ripped a ball into the left field corner and cleared the bases with a triple. Brian Wood then drove in Glanton with an infield single and the Pride led for the first time in the game 4-1.
Tristan Helms and Steven Estep were able to get the final three outs in the bottom of the inning. Nodarse was awarded with the win, Helms got the hold, and Estep earned his first save of the season.
Kitt Capell was the workhorse for the Pride tonight, he caught all 15 innings and went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored in the second game.
Due to a necessary schedule change, the home game on Monday June 5th has been changed to a road game against the SBA Bones. The start time, 7 pm, remains the same.
