Kingsmen Opens Up 2025 Season with Rain-Shortened Comeback Victory

May 31, 2025

CHARLOTTE — The Kingsmen emerged victorious Thursday night at Tuckaseegee Dream Fields as they defeated the Queen City Corn Dogs, 9-7.

From the jump, the offenses were alive as the Kingsmen tallied three runs in the opening inning. However, the Corn Dogs responded in the bottom half, scoring four of their own. In response, the Kingsmen turned to the bullpen early, with Garrett Brust taking the ball in relief.

Brust calmed things down, striking out six hitters and logging back-to-back scoreless frames, giving Kingsmen the opportunity to retake the lead, 6-4. Queen City stormed back in the fourth after three walks and a hit by pitch gave the Dogs a lifeline.

After some trouble, reliever Zane Davis managed to close the door, limiting the damage to three runs. Down one, the Kingsmen rallied in the middle innings, tying the game at seven apiece in the 5th, then taking the lead in inning number six courtesy of clutch singles from Alan Benhardt and Cole Canty.

With rain falling throughout the contest, the decision was made to call the game following the conclusion of the 6th inning. Davis, in line for the win, wrapped things up for good after retiring three of his four batters faced in the home half.

Thursday’s win marks the third consecutive season-opening win for the Kingsmen. They’re back in action Friday at York Comprehensive High School against the Hendersonville Honeycrisps in the 2025 Home Opener.
