MATTHEWS, NC- The Piedmont Pride (23-7) got the last week of the regular season underway on Monday, with a sweep of the Charlotte Galaxy (1-30). The Pride dominated the doubleheader winning the first game 13-4, and the second game 14-1. The Pride won all six matchups against the Galaxy during the regular season, outscoring them 75-11.
Coach Joe Hudak said it was a team effort in the sweep. “I think we played well in all phases. I thought our pitchers threw well in both games, and we swung the bats well. The Galaxy walked some guys and made some errors, and we made them pay for that, which is what good teams do.”
The Pride wasted no time scoring runs in Game One. Joe Campagna hit a two-run homerun and Tee Dubose hit an RBI single to give the Pride a 3-0 lead after one inning. The team didn’t stop there, scoring three runs in the second and a run in the third. The 7-0 lead was plenty of run support for starter Enrique Perez who cruised through four and one-third innings, earning his third win of the season.
The Pride batters continued to produce runs, scoring two in the fourth and three in the seventh, which included a two-run homerun by outfielder Jake Wright.
Game Two was more of the same, as the Pride rolled to a 14-1 win. The batters put the game out of reach early with a seven run first inning. Josh Gregoryhighlighted the inning with a bases clearing triple.
The Pride scored in every inning but the third and the team enjoyed another good outing by their starting pitcher, Tommy Guglielmello. Guglielmello went three and two-thirds allowing only a single hit, while striking out five. Reliever John Brocklebank pitched the final two and a third innings strong, striking out four of the eight batters he faced.
Game Two featured another good game by Campagna, he picked up two more hits to go along with three RBI’s. Connor Wilson went 3-4 with two RBI’s and two runs scored, and leadoff man Brian Wood reached base safely three times and scored each time on base.
With only three games left in the regular season, every game counts. The Pride still have a chance to win their third straight regular season championship, they only trail the SBA Bones by one game for first place. Coach Hudak knows how important games are this late in the season. “We got two good wins to start the week. We just have to take care of our business. The places will figure themselves out, and we’ll be ready to play.”
The Pride look to continue their strong play with a matchup against the Carolina Vipers (24-12) on Wednesday. First pitch from York Comprehensive High School will be at 7 pm.
