YORK, SC- The Piedmont Pride started their season strong Friday night, with 16-2 and 4-0 wins over the Concord Athletics in a doubleheader at York Comprehensive High School.
The Pride were great from both sides of the plate. The team scored 20 runs, and the pitchers struck out 21 opposing batters. The defense was solid as well, turning a double play in each game while only recording one error.
The offense led the way in Game 1; Roury Glanton hit a three-run home run in the 3rd and leadoff man, Brian Wood, hit a solo shot in the 6th. The team had eight extra base hits, along with eight Pride batters recording a RBI. Zach Shank scored three runs to go along with three hits, and Kitt Capell came off the bench and went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. With the offense scoring early, Korey Prince cruised to his first win going 4.2 innings and struck out seven.
The pitchers stole the spotlight in Game 2 as the Pride struck out 11 Concord batters and only gave up five hits. Zach English started the second game and showed great command in 5 innings, striking out seven and only walking one batter. The defense was solid – no errors and a double play turned. David Posas was great in the leadoff spot, going 3 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored. Capell had yet another two hit game, both hits being doubles.
Coach Joe Hudak was impressed with his team’s performance. “It’s good anytime you can win games in different ways. We can win a game scoring 16 runs and then we can win a game scoring 4 runs. We pitched very well and played good defense both games. Gotta be happy with the first day.”
The one disappointing thing from today’s game was when catcher Bailey Montoya went down with an ankle injury in his first at bat of the day. Montoya had to be helped off the field, but Coach Hudak and the team remain optimistic. “We’re gonna get an X-ray in the morning, we don’t think it’s broke but we’ll see. We hope that he is going to be all right.” For now Kit Capell and Brody Shoupe will take over the catching duties.
The Pride travel to Concord High School for another doubleheader against the Athletics (0-3). First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm. The next home game for the Pride will be on Monday June 5th as the team takes on the defending SCBL champs, the SBA Bones.
